Although different sources from the nineteenth century claim that the Beethoven memorial erected in 1827/28 was moved from the Währing cemetery to the Vienna Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) in 1888, it was not the original tombstone that was moved to Steblin but an exact reproduction. Beethoven's tomb was now placed at a representative distance from the others and surrounded by a medium-height wrought-iron fence with stone corner pillars. The original tomb was left intact, as was Franz Schubert's, when the Währing cemetery became the "Schubert-Park".(S.B.)
