Chamber music hall

Hermann J. Abs

On 24 February 1989 the Beethoven-Haus Society celebrated its 100th anniversary and opened a new building to the public, which has since then housed the Beethoven-Haus library and the Beethoven-Haus collection. The centrepiece in the new building is the Hermann J. Abs chamber music hall. It was designed by the Cologne architect Thomas van den Valentyn and named after the president of the Association of many years, Hermann J. Abs (1901-1994), who was extremely supportive of the building of the hall. Prompted by the first honorary president, the famous violinst and friend of Brahms Joseph Joachim, the Beethoven-Haus association organized a large chamber music festival in 1890, which was followed by others in subsequent years. Following Joachim's death in 1907 the chamber music festivals continued to play a lively part in Bonn's musical scene up till 1956. With the opening of the chamber music hall in 1989 this old tradition was revived in a new and contemporary form. Since then the concerts organized by the Beethoven-Haus with their rather unconventional programmes have found a special place in the hearts of the music lovers both in the region and those further afield. Cooperation with other departments in the Beethoven-Haus means that the chamber music hall is able to set its own distinctive accents in Bonn's musical life.
