Early 1801 to autumn 1801 at the latest
Beethoven composed the op. 27 sonatas in 1801, a year in which he increasingly complained about his loss of hearing but was not personally unhappy. On 16 November 1801 he told his friend Franz Gerhard Wegeler in Bonn, 'This change has been occasioned by a dear magical girl who loves me and whom I love. After two years there have been several spiritual moments again and it is the first time that I have felt that marriage might make one happy'. The magical girl was Giulietta Guicciardi, to whom he dedicated the so-called 'Moonlight' Sonata op. 27 no. 2. Beethoven had met her in 1800 and gave her piano lessons. However, the dream was destroyed in 1803 at the latest when Giulietta married Count Robert Gallenberg. (J.R.)
