Nice to know
Henriette Gertrud Walpurgis Sontag was one of the most famous soprano singers of the early 19th century. After some initial success in Darmstadt and Würzburg she came to Vienna where she remained from 1822 until 1825. In September 1822 she and alto singer Caroline Unger visited Ludwig van Beethoven and hence stood in a lively contact with the composer. When Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in D minor, op. 125, was performed for the first time on May 7th, 1724, Henriette Sontag sang the soprano part, thus contributing to the piece's great success through her excellent performance.(S.B.)
