Nice to know
Shortly before Beethoven's death Sebastian Rau had demanded the donated sum of 1,000 florins be returned on behalf of the Philharmonic Society. Since he is unable to do so without proper authorisation, he wants to consult a lawyer. Johann Baptist Bach, trustee of Beethoven's inheritance, already raised objection against the claim for repayment.
As Beethoven's financial inheritance is not extensive, it is suggested that the Philharmonic Society does not withdraw its donation but instead use the money for covering the costs for Beethoven's funeral and erect a memorial. With this solution a long and expensive lawsuit could be avoided. (FG)
