For several years Beethoven had been involved in a dispute concerning the guardianship of his nephew Karl with the latter's mother. He projected all his hopes and longings onto his dead brother's child, whom he showered with both professions of love and merciless strictness. However he was never able to gain his nephew's affection. When Karl left school in 1823 he took on the duties of secretary to his uncle, and not only organized financial transactions but also everyday tasks.
Beethoven spent the summer 1825 in Baden; Karl stayed in Vienna. Beethoven wrote letters to his nephew, sending him on errands, giving him instructions and advice. The composer generally signed these letters "Father".
This letter also contains different errands. Beethoven requires quills and gives instructions regarding the publication of his Quartets opp. 130 and 132. Naturally - Beethoven is taking a cure - he tells him about his state of health. He also talks of the beginning of his friendship with Karl Holz, who was to become Beethoven's close friend in his final two years.
