Nice to know

"Beethoven is dead". These are the words Rau sends Moscheles, saying the composer died after severe death throes on March 26th. Rau had delivered the money gift from the London Philharmonic Society, which Beethoven had asked for financial support. He is now quite surprised to hear that after Beethoven's death seven banks shares were found in his desk. Whether Beethoven had forgotten about them or had not mentioned them on purpose could not be clarified. The money of the Philharmonic Society was also found in the composer's desk. Following an order from Moscheles, Rau demanded the amount to be returned. Until the final settlement of the matter the money will remain at the Vienna Magistrate.

Without the permission of the Philharmonic Society the donation could not be used to cover the funeral costs. Rau suggests giving a part of the money gift to the two domestic helps who had cared for Beethoven with infinite patience, love and loyalty. They are not mentioned in the composer's last will. Only the nephew is named as sole heir. Rau asks for instructions on what to do with the money. Schindler will report about Beethoven's plans to express his gratitude to the Society.

The funeral service is about to take place. Grillparzer has written a funeral speech to be given by actor Heinrich Anschütz. 20 virtuosos and composers will accompany the body with torches. (FG)
