Nice to know

This sculpture was created by Konrad Heinrich Schweickle (1779-1833) from Stuttgart. He received his artistic education in his native town from Johann Heinrich Dannecker. From 1800 on, the young artist continued his studies with Jacques Louis David in Paris and relocated to Rome two years later. There, he soon attained public recognition for his sculptures, particularly for a marble sculpture of young Cupid.

Between 1806 and 1830 Schweickle worked at the Art Academy in Naples. He then returned to Stuttgart where he died three years later.

One of the few conserved works of Schweickle dating back to his time in Italy is this bust of Julie Guicciardi. The sculpture was probably manufactured in Naples as the Countess lived there between 1803 and 1822 with her husband Wenzel Robert Count von Gallenberg. Her marble portrait which served as a model for the shown gypsum cast was made sometime between 1806 and 1822.(S.B.)
