Nice to know

Trenck von Tonder opens his letter with questions and comments concerning Antonie Brentano's family. He then tells Antonie Brentano that he has sent her poems about Beethoven via a messenger, saying that "the one by Zedlitz deserves a medal".

He also sends her Johann van Beethoven's report on his brother's last days and adds, "Beethoven suffered a lot at the end - His chaotic way of life had certainly contributed to his end. But he did not listen to anyone. I myself paid him some very cordial visits about a year ago - but nothing helped this genius". Trenck von Tonder complains that Beethoven had let his servants take advantage of him too much and also that his nephew had cost a lot. Finally he writes of the projects (concert, subscription) which are to contribute to a memorial for the composer.

Trenck von Tonder ends with news of his family as well as of Staudenheim, the doctor who had also treated Beethoven at different times.

Transcription of the paragraph regarding Beethoven, see "Drei Begräbnisse und ein Todesfall", Bonn 2002, S. 44.
