Beethoven asks his friend Gleichenstein for advice. He had offered Simrock works which the latter can only publish in Paris due to the French occupation. Furthermore according to current law Simrock is not allowed to claim copyright because Beethoven is not French. For this reason Simrock has offered Beethoven a lower sum than the one asked. The composer now thinks of accepting it with certain modifications to the contract. The German edition can then be taken over by the Industrie-Comptoir.

Beethoven then asks Gleichenstein for an answer to a problem he has mentioned in a previous letter: Gleichenstein had bought a hat for him which had got torn shortly afterwards. Beethoven would like Gleichenstein to exchange the hat and is waiting impatiently for his response.
