Nice to know

Beethoven had apparently upset Josephine Deym with his jealousy. In this draft of a letter Josephine von Deym emphasizes that she would be disappointed and hurt if she were accused of being flirtatious or anything similar.

She asks Beethoven to respect the sincerity of her feelings for him and to take them seriously.

Beethoven had probably become acquainted with Josephine Deym as early as 1799, but had only fallen in love with her in summer 1804 (following the death of Josephine's husband). We do not know whether his feelings were reciprocated. Their correspondence was intense until their relationship markedly cooled in 1807. Josephine Deym is one of the candidates for the "Immortal Beloved".
