Zusammenfassung

Moscheles writes that the London Philharmonic Society has waived the return of the 1,000 florins C.M. which they had given Beethoven. Thus the dispute concerning this sum was finally resolved, almost a year after Beethoven's death.

Unable to work due to his illness, Beethoven had asked the Philharmonic Society in London to give a benefit concert for him. This concert never took place; instead the Society's board of directors placed £100 at Beethoven's disposal (c. 1,000 florins C.M.), brought to him by Sebastian Rau at the beginning of March 1827. After Beethoven's death the complete sum was found untouched, upon which Rau asked for it to be returned on behalf of the Philharmonic Society. This resulted in a lengthy dispute concerning the money. Jacob Hotschevar, guardian of Beethoven's nephew Karl, kept repeating the argument that his charge was penniless and needed support.

Moscheles therefore considers it important to stress "that the Society renounces its claim to the money solely to avoid going to court". After all the Society had "wanted to give proof of its love and respect for Beethoven's great genius, but not his heirs, even if son or wife".
