Zusammenfassung

Beethoven sends Schindler a libretto by Friedrich August Kanne, saying it is so good "that it does not need one of the top composers". Although Beethoven does not see the libretto as being the most suitable for himself, he does not fully rule out setting it to music but first of all has to take deal with some older obligations. Kanne had been commissioned to write the libretto by Duport, the administrator at the Viennese Kärntnertortheater. It was also Duport who had commissioned Schindler to give Beethoven the libretto. Despite Beethoven's open formulation nothing came of the opera.
