Clear-cut case
Only the lower nine of the original (in all probability) 16 staves have survived on this sketch leaf. A watermark can also not be made out, as it was cut off with the upper part of the leaf. Fortunately assigning a date is clear in the case of op. 117 so that the paper does not have to be consulted. Beethoven received the commission for this work at the end of July 1811 and had already sent the finished composition back by the end of September. (J.R.)
