Nice to know
Beethoven suggests a copyright model for the works offered to his publisher Simrock in Bonn: Simrock can have the rights for the Variations from op. 107 and the Scottish Songs op. 108 for the European mainland, not, however, for the British Isles because Thomson already holds the rights there. So that neither publisher is disadvantaged by the two parallel editions, the publication date will be fixed beforehand. Beethoven explains that this system has served him well and gives Steiner and Artaria as references. Both publishers had worked with him using this system.
He confirms the agreed payment of 130 ducats and asks for it to be paid to Brentano. In return the copies of the works would then arrive in Bonn, again with Brentano's help. Beethoven asks for a prompt reply as to whether Simrock agrees to the time plan for publication laid out here. As far as the plan for the publication of his complete works and payment for the Missa solemnis are concerned (Simrock had offered less than Beethoven had requested), he will respond soon.
