Ludwig van Beethoven, Schuldschein an Sigmund Anton Steiner, Wien, 30. Oktober 1819

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, BH 48

Nice to know

In this promissory note Beethoven commits himself to paying back the 750 florins (Viennese currency) which he had borrowed from Steiner by 30 December 1819. He did not manage to do so. This was not the only sum of money that Beethoven had borrowed from Steiner. In a letter containing an ultimatum on 29 December 1820 (BGA 1422, _b860_HCB Br 284) Steiner demands his money back as well as interest. Beethoven calculates the whole sum as being 2420 florins (Viennese currency) not including interest.
