Nice to know
In his letter to Iganz Moscheles Jacob Hotschevar (who became guardian of Beethoven's nephew following Stephan von Breuning's death in June 1827) asks the Philharmonic Society in London not to ask for repayment of the money (£100) which they had sent Beethoven shortly before his death.
Furthermore Hotschevar asks the Society to financially support the composer's nephew by giving him an additional sum of money.
Beethoven had no longer been able to work on account of his illness and so he had asked the Philharmonic Society in London to hold a benefit concert for him. This concert did not take place, instead the Society's directors decided to give Beethoven £100 (the equivalent of 1,000 florins C.M.), which was delivered by Sebastian Rau at the beginning of March 1827.
After Beethoven's death the complete sum was found untouched, upon which Rau asked for the money to be repaid on behalf of the Philharmonic Society. As a result a lengthy dispute followed concerning the money. Hotschevar's letter was delivered to Moscheles via Sebastian Rau. In an accompanying letter (W 42) Rau supported Hotschevar's request, stressing that a possible court case would cost more than it would achieve. Following this the Philharmonic Society waived repayment of the sum. (FG)
