Nice to know
Two leaves with the coda for the Scherzo of the "Ninth"
Both of these autograph leaves, containing the coda for the second movement of the Ninth Symphony op. 125, were already separated in the nineteenth century. It was only in the mid twentieth century that they both landed, via different routes, in the collection of Hans Conrad Bodmer in Zurich, who in turn bequeathed them with his collection to the Beethoven-Haus in 1956. The paper on which the Coda is written is different to that of the autograph score (held in Berlin). The rastrology is also different: the coda only has twelve systems. The two leaves with the coda are the manuscript which Beethoven sent to his copyist Peter Gläser at a later stage. Beethoven sent a letter to Gläser on the subject shortly after 19 April 1824, "I am sending you the second movement too, so that the coda may be added as well. The coda has not been altered; it was only due to my forgetfulness that it was not added at once." (From the translation by Emily Anderson, 1961.) (J.R.)
