Nice to know

Set of parts for Bonn

Here you can see the corrected copy of all the parts for the Terzet "Termate, empi, tremate", op. 116: each instrument has its own part and there is a vocal score. Beethoven originally had the material produced for the first performance of the Terzet in Vienna on 27 February 1814. Yet he made the note "for Bonn" on the title page of the string parts and the vocal score. Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries retired to Bonn in 1824, having earned enough in London to be able to do so. He was very involved in the musical life on the Lower Rhine, especially in the annual Lower Rhine Music Festival. In 1825 he performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the 8th Lower Rhine Music Festival, before the work was published. He probably asked Beethoven for the Terzet parts for the same occasion. In the end it was not actually performed as the music arrived too late, so that it could not be properly rehearsed beforehand. (J.R.)
