Nice to know

Beethoven tells his publisher Peters in Leipzig that the following works have already been sent to him via the Gebr. Meißl: three works for voice (op. 121b, op. 122 and op. 128), six bagatelles (op. 119,1-6) as well as a tattoo (WoO 20). Two further tattoos (WoO 18, WoO 19) as well as a march (WoO 24) have in the meantime been posted.

Beethoven briefly clarifies the alternative instrumentation for the accompaniment of the vocal works and promises to soon get in touch to provide information on the planned piano quartet/string quartet, as well the mass op. 123. Furthermore he asks for an additional 16 ducats to be transferred as he has provided six bagatelles instead of the four (op. 119) on which they had initially agreed.

Beethoven had entered into negotiations with Peters in May 1822. Peters had already paid for the works in August 1822 and was continually put off by Beethoven after this. He was not happy with the works, which were finally delivered in February 1823, which is why he returned them and asked for replacements.

They corresponded and continued negotiating during 1825, finally ending without any business being concluded. In December 1825 Beethoven repaid Peters the money the latter had given him.
