Homemade: a small book from a large leaf
At first glance this sketch leaf looks rather confused: Beethoven covered it in notes using different writing materials - in pencil and various ink pens. The writing flows in opposite directions. Beethoven not only wrote down musical ideas on this bifolium but also errands and other details. He obviously carried the notebook around with him when he went out. The large leaf in an upright format has been folded several times (which explains the different directions) so that it fitted in his coat pocket like a small book. (J.R.)
