Nice to know
The oldest photographs of the "Schwarzspanierhaus", which was demolished in 1903, and the open space in front were taken to illustrate Gerhard von Breuning"s reminiscences "Aus dem Schwarzspanierhause", published in 1874. They show the situation on the glacis more or less as it would have been during Beethoven"s lifetime. The open space in front is still uncluttered by buildings, affording Beethoven the unimpeded view over Vienna, which he so dearly loved. (S.B.)
