Nice to know
Sketch from summer 1800
This leaf, which mainly contains sketches for the second movement of the String Quartet op. 18 no. 6, was not always a single leaf. It belonged to a sketchbook which Beethoven used in the summer of 1800, whose single leaves he probably bound himself. This sketchbook has not survived as a complete book - in the course of time it was more or less divided up into separate pieces, which are now in different libraries. Richard Kramer reconstructed it and published a facsimile edition of the reconstructed version in 1996. (J.R.)
