Nice to know

Beethoven explains in detail to his friend Ries about his conflict with Stephan von Breuning concerning the termination of the tenancy (in the "red house"). He asks Ries to inform Breuning in person about Beethoven's view of the matter, to clear up all the misunderstandings. In the spring Beethoven had moved into the red house where Stephan Breuning also lived. Probably as the result of an illness, Beethoven moved into Breuning's apartment shortly afterwards, but forgot to give notice on his own apartment, meaning that he had to pay two lots of rent. Breuning and Beethoven fell out over this matter, as Beethoven explains here.

Due to their argument Beethoven moved out of the red house, beginning his summer residence in the country earlier that year. This is why Beethoven asks Ries to tell his brother Johann to rent lodgings in Döbling as he will arrive there in a few days.
