Cantata

L, It. "cantare", = sing. Musical genre; a vocal work usually with several parts for soloist and/or choir and instrumentalists (orchestra). Depending on the occasion the text set to music is of a sacred or secular nature. Beethoven composed three cantatas with several movements and four single-movement cantatas, not all of which are religious in nature.
