Nice to know
Due to financial difficulties and increasing mistrust caused by his deafness, Beethoven forced his housekeepers to keep records of all their spending. In the housekeeping books not only were single items noted but also the sums spent on them. Beethoven checked the lists, noted down how much he had given his housekeeper and how much he had been given back, then crossed out the page as a way of showing it had already been checked.
