Ries enjoys treatment at a health resort and describes the various treatments and activities he engages in. Wegeler plans to attract the interest of Ries for composing an oratorio on a biblical subject. Possibly, Wegeler himself was to write the libretto (see W 73 and W 74). However, Ries rejects Wegeler's suggestion to set the biblical story of Ruth to music as he regards the subject as too lyrical and too poor in contrast: Es ist "kein kräftiger Charakter darunter: Zweytens ist gar kein Gegensatz oder böses Prinzip darin, dieses erschwert die Sache für den Komponisten; noch mehr aber für das Publikum, indem nicht genug Schatten und Licht hinein geworfen werden kann." Ries prefers more earnest and more prominent matters and encourages Wegeler to keep on looking for a suitable subject: "Muß das Oratorium schlechterdings bibelisch seyn so überlegen Sie nun einmal für Ihren alten Freund ein bischen weiter."
