As Johann Wurzer, a schoolmate of Beethoven's, later recalled, Beethoven went on a trip to the old Birgitten Convent in Marienforster Valley in the summer of 1790 or 1791, as the organ there was "either new or still very perfect". Once the church had been unlocked, Beethoven improvised on the organ for his friends so that even the "ordinary working people", who were cleaning the church, lay down their tools and listened "with astonishment and visible enjoyment".(S.B.)
