Beethoven is angry because his friend Gleichenstein has apparently returned to Vienna without getting in touch with him immediately. In a joking manner he tells him to explain himself. The composer is also disappointed that he has not heard from Gleichenstein regarding the dedication of his Cello Sonata op. 69.
In February 1809 Gleichenstein had left for south-west Germany and France, on a secret mission to observe the movements of the French troops for the government. Before his departure he had played a decisive role in the drafting of Beethoven's annuity agreement.
To show his thanks, Beethoven had dedicated the Cello Sonata op. 69 to him (Gleichenstein played the cello) and had also sent him a dedication copy.
