Franz Grillparzer, Rede zu Beethovens Begräbnis am 29. März 1827, Abschrift

The funeral oration written for Beethoven by Grillparzer was delivered at the entrance to the cemetery by the actor Heinrich Anschütz.

It had been important for Grillparzer that the funeral oration (of which there were probably several copies) should not be circulated. When it was first printed in a Berlin newspaper and then on 9 June 1827 in the "Allgemeine Theaterzeitung und Unterhaltungsblatt für Freunde der Kunst, Literatur und des geselligen Lebens", published by Adolf Bäuerle in Vienna, Grillparzer protested about this in an advertisement placed in the "Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode" on 19 June.
