Anton Schindler, Brief an Franz Gerhard Wegeler in Koblenz, Pest, 20. Juni 1828, Autograph

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Sammlung Wegeler, W 82

Only now has Schindler received Wegeler's letter dated April 29th and thanks him for the friendly note. With Beethoven Schindler shares the experience of a disappointed friendship. The twelve year relationship with Beethoven was marked with good and bad times. Although Beethoven has been dead for over a year, Schindler still remembers him very vividly. His flat is filled with memories and items from Beethoven: books, music manuscripts, letters, other documents and things. Schindler has not started with the biography yet as Beethoven had asked him to wait a few years in order to not compromise any contemporaries still alive. Together with his sister Schindler is about to leave Pest and travel to Berlin. He is surprised about the way of life of Stephan von Breuning's widow. Obviously, she is not mourning any more and the children seem neglected. As a lecture Schindler recommends the reply of Adolf Bernhard Marx to the discussion initiated by Gottfried Weber about the authenticity of Mozart's requiem, a dispute even Beethoven had participated in (the article of Marx "Endlich noch Persönliches! Gottfried Webers Uebelthat an Beethoven" was published in the Berlin General Musical Newspaper on April 16th 1828 (vol. 5, no. 16, p. 121-130). It was preceded by Weber's article "Pasquill auf Gfr. Weber von den Herren L. Van-Beethoven und Abbé Stadler", published in edition 29 of the magazine "Caecilia", vol. 8 (1828), p. 60-66.) (FG)
