Salvatore Viganò worked as a dancer, choreographer and composer in many European cities. Between 1793 and 1795 as well as from 1799 onwards, he stayed in Vienna where his ballets met with great success among the audience. One of his pieces, the ballet "Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus" (The creatures of Prometheus) was set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1800/1801. The successful first performance took place on May 28th, 1801 at the Vienna Court Theater. Viganò and his wife Medina, an excellent ballet dancer, participated in the performance. Beethoven's music became one of his first public successes.(S.B.)
