Sankt Stephan (Wien) / Kirchenmeisteramt, Quittung für den Trauerwagen für Ludwig van Beethovens Begräbnis, Wien, 29. März 1827

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Sammlung H. C. Bodmer, HCB V 13

Once the burial laws stated that no-one was allowed to be buried in the inner city any longer, Beethoven's body had to be taken to the appropriate cemetery, in his case the Währing cemetery. The relevant parishes were in charge of making sure that burials were carried out correctly. The receipt was made out for a "quite beautiful coach" drawn by four horses. Beethoven's funeral (on the scale of a state funeral) was watched by a great number of mourners and onlookers.
