Nice to know
Musician Nikolaus Simrock, a bugler, was a member of the Elector"s orchestra in Bonn. Besides his occupation as a musician, he dealt with music supplies and pianos and later opened a music publishing house. Simrock made the acquaintance of Ludwig van Beethoven when the composer joined the orchestra. Obviously, a friendly relationship between the two developed as the letters Beethoven sent Simrock from Vienna show.
Nikolaus Simrock published some relevant pieces composed by Beethoven such as the "Kreutzer Sonata" for piano and violin, op. 47, and the cello sonatas, op. 102. Simrock"s son Peter Joseph (1792-1868) who later took over his father"s publishing house temporarily stood in close contact with Beethoven and visited him in Vienna in 1816. (S.B.)
