Maurice Schlesinger, Brief an Ludwig van Beethoven in Wien, Paris, 3. Juli 1822, Autograph

Maurice Schlesinger was the son of the Berlin publisher Adolph Martin Schlesinger. In 1819 he visited Beethoven. During this time he not only received the autograph score of the canon WoO 174, which was dedicated to him, but also Beethoven's opp. 108, 109, 110 and 111 for publication by his father. In 1821 Maurice Schlesinger moved to Paris and founded a music publishing house there. In this letter he tells the composer that he will now also engrave Beethoven's late piano sonatas (published by his father in Berlin) in Paris "to expand their market".

To be on the safe side he asks Beethoven once again whether op. 111 really only has two movements and whether the copyist has perhaps forgotten a fast movement. He also asks Beethoven for metronome markings for opp. 109-111. Like his father, Maurice also asks whether the composer has written any new quartets, quintets or Lieder because he would like to publish them.

Finally he happily recalls his visit to Beethoven in 1819 and claims to honour the canon dedicated to himself "like a relic".
