Beethoven encloses a letter of recommendation (no longer surviving) for his friend, addressed to the Munich music director and composer Peter von Winter. He hopes that the letter will be of help to Gleichenstein in Munich.
Ignaz von Gleichenstein began a year-long journey in February 1809, officially for family reasons. In actual fact - Gleichenstein was a government official - it was a secret mission: Gleichenstein was to observe the movements of the French troops. His first port of call was Munich.
