Nice to know
When he was about 12 years old, Beethoven became a member (at first unpaid) of the electoral court orchestra, in which he played the organ, viola and harpsichord. Under the direction of his teacher Christian Gottlob Neefe, Beethoven often played the viola and harpsichord with the Bonn court orchestra in the city palace of the Cologne Electors. He took part in the rehearsals and performances given by the court orchestra and the music theatre, who had their own theatre in the Residence near Koblenzer Tor. As deputy court organist he played the organ in the palace chapel (which is today part of the university). (S.B.)
