Beethovens Kopf auf dem Totenbett von oben - Ölstudie von Josef Danhauser, Wien, 1827

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, B 951

Nice to know

Whereas the profile of Beethoven's death mask was done more carefully, this rather unusual view of the head from above is a rather baroque, sketch-like rendering. Danhauser produces light and shade using single dabs of the brush in just one colour and does not seem to be unduly concerned about creating a smooth transition between the different colours. Whole parts of the undercoat and initial sketch are even visible around the nose and the borderline separating the head from the background. The manner of the representation suggests that it was meant for the artist's personal use.(S.B.)
