Ferdinand Ries, Brief an Franz Gerhard Wegeler in Koblenz, Frankfurt am Main, 25. Mai 1836, Autograph

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Sammlung Wegeler, W 72

Ries sends Wegeler a new harmonica because the repair of the old one was not done well. Again, he invites Wegeler to talk about an oratorio, create a small opera from a French piece, letters from Beethoven and much more. Ries will not receive the manuscript of the second Leonore overture Schindler asked for as a loan. He wanted to conduct the work at a beneficiary concert for the Bonn Beethoven monument: "Schindler hat mir die Overture von Beethoven zum Concert zu seinem Denkmal abgeschlagen - wahrscheinlich aus lauter Freundschaft, und Ehrfurcht vor B[eethoven]-, den er von Anfang bis zu Ende wie ein alter Hunnenklepper reitet - ekelhaft - er hat mir einen launigen dummen Brief geschrieben, um es zu bemanteln. Mag zum Teufel gehen." (Schindler did not give me Beethoven's overture to perform at the concert for his monument, probably out of friendship and reverence for Beethoven whom he has been riding like a hun's jade ever since, how disgusting, he wrote me a moody letter to explain it. To hell with him!) Concerning the concert, other problems occurred with the Frankfurt Orchestra and its conductor Karl Ferdinand Wilhelm Guhr (1787-1848). Ries is waiting for the engraving of his edition of Beethoven's "Knight's ballet", WoO 1, fearing that Dunst will not publish it ("Dunst wird sie nicht veröffentlichen.") (FG)
