Nice to know
Beethoven asked the Philharmonic Society in London for financial support as he was unable to work because of his illness. Sebastian Rau, educator at banker Eskeles and responsible for handing over the Society's money to Beethoven, is surprised about having to learn about Beethoven's serious illness in London. After all, he is a Vienna citizen. Rau confirms receipt of the 100 Pounds the Society transferred for Beethoven. Beethoven was very touched when he learnt about the payment and said "It was heart-wrenching to see him folding his hands and almost surrendering to tears of joy and gratitude. He pointed out how enjoyable it would have been for the Society if they had witnessed this scene.
Beethoven's state of health is still bad. His doctor Johann Baptist Malfatti does not see any chance for improvement. After Beethoven was notified about the financial support, his condition improved shortly in the following night. Reliable nurses are taking care of him. Anton Schindler also looks after him regularly and manages his correspondence and financial affairs. Rau enclosed the receipt signed by Beethoven (not preserved) for the 1,000 florins Convention coin (100 Pounds). Beethoven wants to use the money for credit repayment. (FG)
