Nice to know

Ferdinand Ries had invited Beethoven to London on behalf of the London Philharmonic Society on 9 June and commissioned him to write two new symphonies, which were to be performed by Beethoven there. Beethoven replies to his offer in the part of the letter which has not survived. He asks for a large payment and money for travel expenses, but in return gives the Society sole rights to both the symphonies.

In the postscript to the letter (which has survived) written by Beethoven, he turns to Ries in person and hopes that his demands will be accepted. He asks about the size of the Philharmonic Society's orchestra and hall, and whether the wind are doubled.
