Nice to know
Beethoven"s friend, Count Moriz Dietrichstein was director of the Court Band and artistic director at the Vienna Court Theater. Due to his position he had a strong influence on the city"s musical life and was able to support Beethoven in many ways. In 1823 he stood up for the composer when Beethoven aspired a position at the Court.
Dietrichstein made himself a name as composer by writing a musical version for 16 poems by German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe dating from 1711. Apart from Beethoven"s song compositions, Dietrichstein"s pieces were the first important musical versions for texts written by Goethe. (S.B.)
