Nice to know

Although Felix Mendelssohn was explicitly encouraged to participate in the Beethoven festivities by Franz Liszt, however, he declined the invitation due to other duties. When he later received a letter from the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome containing an homage to the Beethoven monument (BH 159, 28), he forwarded the letter to Breidenstein, asking him to read it out aloud at the festivities.
