Fragment of a leaf from the Petter Sketchbook
Here you can see one of many sketch leaves which originally belonged to the so-called Petter Sketchbook and was removed in the nineteenth century (it was a common practice for collectors to separate single leaves from a book). The leaf is a fragment. It forms the upper part of a leaf, whose lower half has also been found: the remaining six staves are in St. Petersburg. The Petter Sketchbook predominantly contains sketches for the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. The leaf shown here contains sketches for the fourth movement of the Seventh Symphony. (J.R.)
