Nice to know
Puzzling remains
Very little of Beethoven's manuscript material for Leonore and Fidelio has survived, and very few manuscripts still exist from the first stage of composition (1804/5). Amongst these few is a single leaf from the first Finale. It remains a mystery why this particular leaf has survived from the original Finale which comprised 180 pages. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it immediately preceded the closing sections, which Beethoven completely replaced with newly-composed sections in 1814. (Helga Lühning)
