Babette Koch (1771-1807) - anonymes Ölgemälde, wohl aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, Fotografie, Heimerzheim, um 1920?

Beethoven-Haus Bonn, NE 81, Band I, Nr. 106

Nice to know

During the last years Ludwig van Beethoven spent in Bonn he was a frequent guest at the "Zehrgarten", a posh restaurant on Bonn's market place. The restaurant, a venue for artists and intellectuals, was operated by Mrs. Koch, a widow. Her beautiful daughter Barbara (Babette) had many admirers and friends, one of them the young Beethoven.

The fact that he sent her at least two letters after leaving Bonn gives evidence of Beethoven's passion for Babette Koch. In 1802 she married Earl Anton von Belderbusch (1758-1820), whose uncle was an influential minister at the Court.(S.B.)
