Nice to know

Beethoven thanks Griesinger for his letter and promises to visit him in Vienna, as soon as he is in the city. He mentions his bad state of health, which has prevented him from working for the last five months. Beethoven calls Griesinger a commendable man "generally - and in particular on account of his Haydn biography".

Georg August von Griesinger was a Saxon diplomat in Vienna and represented the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel. In 1810 he published "Biographische Notizen über Joseph Haydn". His correspondence with the publisher in Leipzig provides us with an exceptional source of information on the Viennese musical scene of his time.
