Nice to know
Joseph von Varena organized benefit concerts in Graz to help the Ursuline nuns living there. Beethoven contributed works for these concerts several times. In this letter Beethoven thanks Varena for sending 100 florins and stresses that it is very unpleasant for him to receive money from the Ursuline nuns. He will use it to cover the costs of copying the material for the performance and will definitely send back the balance. Beethoven had already sent Varena the parts for the performance of his Oratorio op. 85 at the beginning of the year. He recommends
Varena to use it at his own discretion. "Christus am Ölberge" ("Christ on the Mount of Olives") was performed in the second half of the concert on 11.4.1813.
