Direct from the market
It's surprising what can be found in markets in north Italian towns! Thomas Cramer from Aachen bought this copy of the Piano Variations WoO 71 from the beginning of the nineteenth century at a market in Siena and presented it to the Beethoven-Archiv in 1982. As the design of the title page suggests, it is probably a copy of a printed edition, possibly even the original edition, published by the Viennese publisher Artaria & Comp. in 1797. (J.R.)
