Nice to know
Beethoven asks his friend Karl Holz to come to lunch the following day. As was often the case when talking to friends, Beethoven teases Holz, by inviting him after his "Liguorian penitence". He is probably referring to the severe penitence undertaken by the Redemptorists, who were founded by Alfonso Maria de Liguori. Beethoven often humorously recommended religious exercises to friends.
